Margunn Aanestad

Margunn Aanestad is Professor of Information Systems at the University of Agder, Norway, and has earlier worked in the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo, Norway, from which she also acquired her PhD in 2002. Her basic degrees are in electronic engineering with a specialization in medical technologies, but her PhD work and later research has taken a cross-disciplinary view on sociotechnical phenomena. While drawing on organizational studies, CSCW and STS, she has published primarily in IS outlets, including EJIS, ISJ, ISR, JAIS, JIT, JSIS and MISQ. She is member of several IS journals’ editorial board and also the AIS’ current Task Force on open access policy.  Her research has addressed the implementation of digital services that transform organizational and inter-organizational collaboration, particularly in the healthcare sector, such as digital collaboration, patient-centered solutions, and personalized medicine. She also has an interest in public health information systems in the global South. Theoretically, she has contributed to the research stream on information infrastructures within the IS field. Her current research investigates what characterizes digital platform ecologies in a public sector domain, which has more complex value creation and value capture mechanisms than the commercial domains, in which most existing platform research is conducted. In addition, ongoing research projects investigate the effects of digitalization (in the form of automation and platform-based collaboration) on the workforce’s competency requirements, and how policy can stimulate industry’s utilization of digital technologies to transform into more sustainable business operations.
